Nice guess, but actually, this was Miyamoto's original ideal for the first Mario. He knew no one would accept it, but that it was just the way the world needed to be. Unfortunately, Nintendo called in a hit on him, he went into hiding, they held a Miyamoto lookalike contest, replaced the face of gaming itself and the Mario we know today was spawned.
